You can almost hear the music
The former Beatle, Paul McCartney has called for “meat-free Mondays” according to the Press Association. You can almost hear how that would sound in lyrics to a song.
Lifecycle assessments on food consistantly show that red meat from large animals is one of the most greenhouse gas-intensive of food choices available to us. Science News reviewed a paper about this in May in an article titled, It’s the meat not the miles.
It turns out that methane (23 times the warming effect of carbon dioxide) from burping is a significant source of the problem and scientist are scurrying trying to find feed additives that may help with digestion. Flax seeds have shown some promise. Nitrates and cysteine may provide another clue.
The exciting thing is to see the force of innovation getting unleashed on such important problems. For his part, I hope Paul McCartney can put this tune to music.
